Description

Figure in oils painted on 28 by 21 inch board and sold in summer 1978 . Based on a vintage postcard, not the best photo representation; there were some very patient details, but nice to receive this as a memento of a distant past, from the only buyer I'm still in contact with. It was half finished when it was reserved but not rushed like more recent paintings, kept wet for months with linseed oil, still making it difficult to photograph without glare today , forgot to say it's best not to use a flash so I've added a bit more contrast which has in part removed the furnature in the background. I'll dig out the original postcard soon. I added the fire and invented most of the background, 29 years ago. If I was to redo this I would zoom in on the figure and aspire to reduce it to a few simple yet meaningful lines; most favoured artists musicians authors teachers etc can say it all in so few words; I guess we can only learn from one mistake at a time but it payed the bills and is still respected as one of the few available paintings of people by me, as opposed to the many paintings by my brother. Here is a link to my brother's most recent pieces. http://www.thejamesgallery.ie/searchresults.asp?SearchString=Alan+Quigley&serach.x=24&serach.y=11

Personally i find covering half of the image (with my hand) makes it easier for me to make out the image, anyway your fire could've used some more detail(including its range of effect). Nice painting nonetheless. njah :)

I am sure the photo does not make justice to the original....Looks like a wonderful work!.....photographing painting is an art by it self.

i'd like to see some detail shots of this so it would be easier to understand of what quality the artwork is. i know how difficult it is dealing with reflections on a painting.
